Sony Pocket Reader & Words Move Me

Monday, February 08, 2010 Posted by The Mom Jen

Books have always been a part of my life. Growing up I read for pleasure. In college I was going into teaching so all my work was based around reading and analyzing books and stories. Now as a former teacher and parent, it is so important for my husband and I to be seen reading, read to our children, and to expect reading to be a part of our kid's lives.

Sony began a campaign around their new literature community wordsmoveme.com. They built this community to help enhance discussions around books and literature, which seem to have fallen off over the years, and expose younger generations to the works that have really impacted lives. "Words Move Me" celebrates the words that move us and to share our reading experiences with others. Connecting with readers around literary moments enables us to express our individuality, share our own stories, and find commonalities with others.

Also affiliated with the Words Move Me campaign, is finding the books you love and buying them for the Sony Pocket Reader.

The Reader Pocket Edition lets you access up to 350 of your favorite books from anywhere. Its elegant, lightweight design is small enough to slip into a purse or jacket pocket, and features a 5" display and provides up to TWO FULL WEEKS of reading (7500 continuous page turns) on a single battery charge. For added versatility, it supports multiple file formats including ePub and PDF, offering access to more books from more places, including the Reader Store and over one million free public domain titles from Google Books. Thanks to Sony, I will be getting a Pocket Reader to enjoy and share with my family!

I recently read "South of Broad" by Pat Conroy and it really made me remember my childhood. The book is set in Charleston, SC and I am originally from NC. I got so caught up in this book that I did not want it to end.

I recently read The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and I think about it often. He wrote it with humor and pathos but I am always saddened when I think of the life he left behind upon exiting our world. There were alot of life lessons he made me think about - and mainly his book left me feeling that he lived his life to the utmost; a lesson for all of us. Don't sweat the small stuff - live the best life you can while you can.

The Time Traveler's Wife moved me. It had a lot of depth to it, and the love the main characters had for each other was very apparent with every word. I saw the movie a few weeks after I read the book, and then I came home and started reading the book again.

In high school we had to read "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank. It quickly caught my attention and was the first book where I felt sorry that it was going to end. While written in 1959, it's completely relevant to today and was the book that helped nurture my love of horror/thriller/post-apocalyptic stories.

Of the many books that I've read "Oh, the Places You'll Go! By Dr. Seuss stays with me. I never received this book as a gift but would have loved to. I have bought this book for all of my kids to give to them when they graduate HS. This book by Dr. Seuss gives an uplifting motivational message to anyone who has accomplished something and is heading to the next level of "life". I will always remember how it made me feel to read the rhyming prose of Dr. Seuss being turned into such a strong, relevant message. This book can be given to someone who has just landed a job, graduated, gotten a raise, been saved, even retired from a job! It is so fitting and I hope I can wait to give the copies I bought to my kids at graduation. There are so many times in their lives where this book would be appropriate. If you haven't read it, you should!

Bel Canto is one of the latest books I have (re)read that moves me to tears. It is by Ann Patchett and is a beautiful piece of work. This woman has a way of using words that make you smell the flowers in the courtyard garden.

It is a truley stunning tale of friendship, love and trust among people thrust into a situation beyound their control.

    A must read!!

I just recently started reading books by Elizabeth Berg. They are all so good but "True to Form" has been my favorite. It is written from the point of view of a 13 year old girl who has recently lost her mom and I just love how th eauthor has captured the essence of this girls frame of mind. I will read everything this woman writes! (hopefully on a Sony Reader!)

The book I just read was Water for Elephants by Sarah Gruen. It's the story about a boy and how circumstances mold his life and how relationship are found in the most unusual places. It's not something I would usually read, but, I couldn't put it down.

I first read The Catcher in the Rye as a teenager. I was instantly able to identify with the main character, Holden Caufield, as I'm sure many teens are. The first person narrative of the book made it at times seem as if I was Holden, going through some of the uncertainties of the teenage years.

Because of my BFF's insistence, I read Way of The Peaceful Warrior
by Dan Millman. It spoke to me about achieving a higher level of consciousness and focusing on what is truly important in life rather than getting hung up on petty disagreements and failures. Of course, I haven't quite gotten to (anywhere near) that level, but it gives me something (else) to aspire to. It's a great read.

I've recently read Without a Map by Meredith Hall. Not something I would have normally read, but I had an excerpt assigned to read in my class and I was hooked. It was beautifully written. A collection of memiors, starting with living a shunned life in 1966 being 16 and pregnant. How times have changed.
